Georgia and the Carolina’s were a surprise to us, the history of Savannah was impressive and it was wonderful to know that there is a dedicated society to ensure that the history stays true to its roots.
This is evident as one of the gardens was turned into a car park and once the city realised that they were destroying Savannah so they pulled down the car park and turned it back into a garden, they have maintained 22 out of the original 24 gardens.
Charleston in South Carolina is where the first shots were fired which commenced the civil war, we visited Fort Sumter which still has the remnants of the old fort. The downtown area of Charleston has maintained it’s French Quarter with cobbled roads and period homes.
We traveled into North Carolina and along the Blue Ridge Parkway which was a beautiful drive through the Smokey Mountains, this area is known to have over 100 waterfalls. We visited Chimney Rock which has been used in some movies like “The Last Mohicans”, close by is Lake Lure which is where parts of the “Dirty Dancing” were filmed and every year the town holds a dirty dancing weekend.
From here we will travel to Virgina and Pennsylvania before heading into Washington DC.
